There are 2 different messaging systems for students and instructors in Canvas courses.
- The Canvas Messaging System, also know as Canvas Inbox
- Your Franklin University Microsoft Email
These 2 messaging systems are different from one another. Therefore, to avoid communication headaches, it may be helpful to understand how instructors and fellow classmates plan to use these systems for your courses.
Navigating to Each System From Canvas
Icons for each messaging service are part of the left hand menu navigation.
The Canvas Messaging System
Canvas Inbox messages are built into Canvas. For more information about how to generate a Canvas message, please use this link.
Please note that by default, any new Canvas message will send an alert to your Microsoft Email (this setting can be altered in your Canvas Notification settings). You can reply directly in that email to continue the conversation, or you can reply directly from your Canvas Inbox. Here is what the alerting email about the Canvas Inbox message looks like in your email.
Microsoft Email
While Canvas Inbox message alerts will can generate an email to your Franklin email address (which can be replied to directly from your email), a new email in your Franklin email to another student will not populate into the Canvas inbox. Another difference for your email is that unlike Canvas Inbox messages, flags or alerts for new emails will not show up in Canvas at all. For more information about generating and email from your inbox:
1. Log into mail.franklin.edu to see your email.
2. See this link for instructions for email generation.
