What is Honorlock?
Honorlock is an online proctoring service used by Franklin University. To get started with your exam while being proctored by Honorlock, students need a computer with a webcam and microphone. Additionally, exams proctored using Honorlock will most commonly utilize a web browser extension from Honorlock. However, some exams will require use of both the Honorlock browser extension and an Honorlock desktop application running on a computer.
For more information about proctoring services allowed in your course, please visit your course in Canvas. Many courses are equipped with a course object entitled Student Proctored Exams with such information.
If you have any questions about whether to use the just the browser, or also need the additional desktop application, please reach out to The Testing Center.
Navigating to Honorlock Within A Course
Navigation to Honorlock can be found in your course left-hand navigation menu.
Getting Ready Before Your Exam - Browser extension
Here are steps you can take before you exam to be prepared for a successful venture using Honorlock.
Step 1 - Verify Your Computer Will Meet the Requirements for Honorlock
Honorlock requires the use of a webcam and microphone. To see a full list of system requirements for using Honorlock, please click here. Next, to run a system check, please click here.
Step 2 - Remove ProctorU Browser Extension
Uninstall the ProctorU browser extension from Google Chrome. Students who took courses prior to Fall term of 2024 may have used ProctorU for online proctoring. The Honorlock browser extension will likely interfere with a pre-existing ProctorU browser extension.
To find your existing Chrome extensions, click the ellipsis (3 dots) in the upper right corner of Chrome > Extensions > Manage Extensions. From the Manage Extensions screen you will have the option to Remove any unwanted or out of date extensions added to Google Chrome.
Step 3 - Install the Honorlock Google Chrome Extension
Install the Honorlock Google Chrome extension on your computer. You will be prompted to install the Honorlock extension the first time you open Honorlock 1.3 from your course left-hand menu navigation (screenshot in first section of this article). Additional resources are linked directly below.
- For more information and a link to download the extension, please click here.
- For troubleshooting tips with installing the extension, please click here.
Step 4 - Familiarize Yourself with Using Honorlock

Step 5 - Try a Practice Exam
To take a practice exam, open Honorlock 1.3 from your course left-hand menu navigation (screenshot in first section of this article). Within this screen, you will see the option to take the practice exam.
Password Input Support
The HonorLock system utilizes an automated password input tool as part of your testing experience. When testing on Honorlock, locate the window (as pictured below) to click the button that will Unlock your exam after check-in is complete.
Please ensure that you have clicked into the textbox where the password must be typed before triggering this tool to begin password input. This tool can also be minimized, so if you cannot see the window, check the bottom left corner of your testing web browser.
The Honorlock Test Taker Experience - Desktop Application
In the Fall 2025 semester, students in WEBD-236 and Q sections of MATH courses will need to use the Honorlock desktop application in addition to the web browser extension. For additional information about running this desktop application for your test session, please click here for more information.
Honorlock Sideview Camera - Second Camera Needed
Some courses will require students to use a second camera (typically a smartphone) positioned to the side during proctored exams. This provides a profile view of the student’s desk, keyboard, hands, and lap.
Key points when a second camera is required:
- The sideview camera is used in addition to the front facing webcam
- Students can use a phone or secondary webcam
- iPads and tablets are not supported as sideview cameras
- Honorlock enforces camera framing and may prompt students if hands or desk move “out of frame"
Common Issues:
- Trouble pairing the phone/secondary camera
- “Out of frame / hands not detected” warnings
- Phone battery dying mid exam (students should keep phones plugged in)
- Camera placement uncertainty (angle, distance, height)
-
Students unsure whether their setup is acceptable before the exam
