Some students and faculty have reported that they are not able to access Canvas for coursework while using Eero routers. Listed below are a few workarounds that may help bypass this issue.
1. Some students and faculty have had luck changing their default DNS. DNS is a protocol for how websites are looked up and returned. While changing this protocol is your choice, and while the Help Desk cannot directly recommend changing your DNS, we have seen some students and faculty have luck using DNS sources such as 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1 to get our instance of Canvas to load. If you decide to change your DNS and would like assistance in the process, please give the Help Desk a call. Contact information listed here.
2. In the Eero app, you may wish to setup a guest network. Connecting to the guest network (Wi-Fi only, not wired connection) which may allow you to bypass any security hang-ups with the Eero router for a website. You can turn on the Guest Network for Eero routers in the Settings menu of the app.
3. Another option that may help is to temporarily disable the IPv6 protocol. In the Settings menu of the app, open Network Settings to turn off IPv6. If this solution allows connection to Canvas, you may want to consider turning this option back for other internet activity.
4. If you have signed up for Eero Plus (which may be a paid subscription), you can add the following sites as Allow Sites:
- gateway.franklin.edu
- franklin.instructure.com
For more information about adding Allow Sites using Eero Plus, please click here.
5. Additionally, some users have reported bypassing this error by turning off the advanced security features of Eero Plus (if subscribed for that security layer). This step is entirely your choice, is not the direct recommendation of Franklin University, and should only be taken at your own risk. If taken, the step could result in unintended consequences.
6. Finally, you may wish to contact Eero support (support@eero.com) or the support contact for your internet service provider. Website connection errors can happen at the internet service provider level, or at the router level.
If the listed workarounds above do not resolve issues with access, we suggest securing an alternate internet source or internet routing method while accessing Canvas.
