Course Access for Students
Instructors cannot grant course access for students. Course access is controlled through course enrollment. After successful enrollment in a course, visibility inside Canvas will take place 10 days prior to the course start date.

How do I access courses I am getting ready to teach or prepare for an upcoming course?
Course access is setup when you are assigned to a teach a course section. Course visibility in Canvas takes place 14 days prior to the course start date.
There are some cases in which a professor wishes to see a course prior to the 14-day window (as mentioned above). In such cases there are a few options to prepare for the course.
- Preferred method: The course Lead Faculty has access to the course and therefore can provide you with an .epub file download of the course. For more information, please click here.
- The course Lead Faculty can also grant "lurking" access to a course. For more information, please click here.
- Your Lead Faculty can also request access to prior sections of a course that ran in prior terms. These requests need to come from Lead Faculty and be submitted to the Help Desk.
- If you need to view the Blueprint version of a course, please contact the Institute at institute@franklin.edu with detailed information about why you are requesting non-editing teacher access to see a Blueprint course.
How do I teach courses past the end date for an incomplete grade?
How do I gain Lead Faculty access to a course?
Lead Faculty access is granted to provide oversight for courses in which you have been given the role of Lead Faculty. However, you will not be able to see past sections of your courses.
- If Lead Faculty access needs changed, make a request through the Faculty Support Request Form found on the Faculty Resource Directory.

How do I gain Program Chair access to courses?
Program Chair access is a multistep setup through the Help Desk and then onto the Institute. To initiate the request, please first reach out to helpdesk@franklin.edu.
How do I gain access to Blueprint versions of courses?
If you need to view the Blueprint version of a course, please contact the Institute at institute@franklin.edu with detailed information about why you are requesting non-editing teacher access to see a Blueprint course.
How do I gain design access to Canvas courses?
- The staff and faculty for i4 gain access through a ticket to the Institute.
- Non-i4 staff and faculty are not provided with design access to Franklin courses in Canvas.
How do lead faculty add other faculty to a current section?
There are times lead faculty need to grant course accesses to colleagues. Some examples include an if an adjunct needs a substitute for a short period of time; if a new adjunct wants to see how another adjunct conducts the course; or if a colleague needs course access to cover for the lead faculty on vacation. As a lead faculty, you can add an user to a current section. To do so:
- Choose "Viewer" in the role box if you are adding a colleague to cover for you while on vacation.
- Choose "Reviewer" if you are adding a new adjunct to a course so that they can observe how experienced faculty teach a course.
- Choose "Reviewer" if you are adding someone to conduct a faculty observation.
Note: Lead faculty can only grant access to current sections. To request access to Blueprint version courses or past sections, send a request to institute@franklin.edu
All other course access questions
Faculty and staff access that is not covered by the questions listed above is handled on a per-case basis. However, much of the access requests that are not covered in the questions above will not be approved. Due to the sensitive nature of academic information, access is limited by design.
Further access questions can be directed to the Help Desk and may be escalated from there.
