RefWorks Citation Manager (RCM) is a Word plugin that you can use to access your RefWorks citations from within Microsoft Word. Using RCM will let you input your in-text citations from RefWorks while working in your Word document. The boxes on this page explain how to install and use RCM.
NOTE: Previously, this plugin may have been named Write-n-cite for users with older versions of Microsoft Word or have used the previous version. Currently, an older version of the plugin in Microsoft Word with their Franklin University account may run into issues when using RCM – RefWorks (formerly called Write-n-cite).
If you are met with the prompt (as shown above):
1. Select Learn more, this will redirect you to the support page for RefWorks – RCM.
- Please note that this support page may contain information regarding newer versions of RCM and Microsoft Word. Using the latest version of such tools is the best way to insure compatibility.
2. Under the How do I add the new RCM add-in in Word? section of the linked page, select the link that is shows to be redirected to Microsoft Marketplace to install the plugin location. Once on that page, select Get it now.
3. After successfully installing the plugin on your computer, exit Microsoft Word and complete a computer restart using the computer's Start Menu.
4. After the computer restart, upon launching Microsoft Word, select RCM from the top menu and then select RefWorks Citation Manager. This will populate a login screen.
NOTE: You still may see a menu option for RefWorks – RCM next to the new menu option (RCM). The RefWorks – RCM is the old plugin and should not work, please disregard that menu section.
5. When prompted to login into this application (as shown above), your Franklin University accounts is not connected with RefWorks. While it is recommended that you use your Franklin University email address when creating a RefWorks account, it will not be connected to your University account, thus a password change in one system will not affect the other. Therefore,
- Do Not select Use login from my institution, as this will not work as intended.
- Use a different password than you use for your primary Franklin University account
