Setup: Microsoft Teams for Your Course
To sign up for using Teams for your Fall 2022 course, please reach out to the Help Desk. Once the Help Desk has enabled Teams for your course, please see the following guide: please click here.
Setup: Microsoft Teams Course Meet Sessions and Recording Management
Meet sessions must be setup using a channel with your Team. This allows the recording permission to be setup correctly for your class. For more information about setting this up, please see the following guide: please click here.
1 on 1 Meetings and Office Hours
Unlike course Meet sessions which much be setup through a Team channel, 1-on-1 meetings or office hours have multiple ways setup can work.
Scheduling a 1-on-1 Teams meeting with a student
1. Go to the calendar app in Teams.
2. Click the dropdown arrow next to the New meeting button and select Schedule meeting.
3. After the meeting details are filled out and sent to the student (add the student as attendees to the meeting), the meeting will be added to your Teams calendar. Upon opening the meeting invite, you will see an option to join the meeting when ready.
Video or Audio-only calls through chat
1. Go into the Chat feature in Teams.
2. Find your recent chat session with the student. If you have not chatted with them yet, use this icon to start a new chat session and type in their email address to find them.
3. After the chat is established, you will see this icon to start a call with them. Students will also see these icons if they wish to call you.
Breakout Rooms in Microsoft Teams
Breakout rooms are a great tool to enhance collaboration. Microsoft offers plenty of control for an instructor to create breakout rooms, manually or automatically assign participants, and take control in breakout room. For more information, please see the following guide: please click here.
Collaboration and Group Project Work
There are a few options for students to collaborate in the Teams space environment. If you wish to have them collaborate where you can view this collaboration, you can do one of the following:
Create Channels (Public and Private Channels)
You can create as many public and/or private channels as are needed. To create a channel, right click on your Teams more option menu (3 dots to the right of the team name) and select Add channel. It is suggested that you have the channel show up in everyone's channel list.
Upon naming the channel, you can also select the permission. If you make it a private channel, it will not show up for students unless they have been granted access to that channel.
Private channels have lock icons next to them.
File Sharing
Students can use this icon to add files for sharing and collaboration in their posts, replies, and chats.
Sometimes students may comment that they are unable to collaborate on a file shared by you or another student. Please note that by default, files are shared in view-only mode. To allow those in the chat to edit a file that you are sharing, when posting the file to be shared please click on the message People in this chat with the link can view. This will open a menu to allow others to be able to edit and collaborate on the file.
Student Group Private Chat
If you do not need to be involved in direct group collaboration for a project, students can also start a private chat amongst themselves for groupwork. For student instructions on this, please see this guide.
