Different Kinds of Textbooks and E-Textbooks
They are multiple kinds of textbooks used in Franklin University courses.
1. Physical textbooks - some courses require you to order a physical textbook(s) for reading material. Please see the following guide to order textbooks. Click Here
2. Free e-textbooks - some courses offer free e-textbooks that students will not be charged for. If you open your e-textbook course object, it may direct you to a free source, such as the Franklin University library.
3. Integrated e-textbooks. Integrated e-textbooks are course materials that are paid for by you the student. Please look at your charges from Franklin University to determine the amount of the charge. If you wish to opt out of this book access and charge, instructions for opting out are listed below.
- See the difference between integrated e-textbooks and integrated e-textbooks with courseware below.
Locate your course materials in the course syllabus to determine which type of book(s) your course is using.
In BlueQuill
- To learn about the course materials - outlined in orange
- To access the e-textbook - outlined in purple
- If it is your first time opening your e-textbook, you may see a welcome page. For some e-textbook vendors, such as Vital Source, you may be asked to enter an email address.
- Highly recommended - Adding your email address may allow you to read your book from different devices, share notes/highlights with others, and access the textbook. For example Vital Source allows for access to e-textbooks from completed courses for 3 years.
In Canvas
1. Log into your course in Canvas
2. Click on the book object in your course.
3. On the next screen you will see the Read within the book object that opens.

E-Textbooks Compared to E-Textbooks with Courseware
There are 2 categories of e-textbooks used at Franklin University. Often, both kinds are just referred to as e-textbooks. However, a more accurate description lies below:
Traditional E-Textbooks: Traditional e-textbooks are a digital copy of reading materials that are either required or recommended for the course.
Many traditional e-textbook are offered through VitalSource.
E-Textbooks with Courseware: What is sometimes referred to as an e-textbook is actually an e-textbook with courseware. E-Textbooks with courseware have 2 purposes; reading material and assignments. Assignments as part of the courseware may be homework, practice work, labs, study guides, training materials, quizzes, or more. However both portions of the e-textbook with courseware (reading material and assignments) are completed outside of BlueQuill, and are both part of the same e-textbook platform. Please be aware that opting out of an e-textbook with courseware will remove your ability to complete class assignments. You will be prompted to purchase access once the publisher has discontinued your original access after opting out.
Many e-textbooks with Courseware are offered through the Pearson and McGraw-Hill platforms.
Opting Out of E-Textbooks
Important information exist in the video at the top of the following article: https://support.bluequill.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003729628-Opting-Out-Of-E-Textbooks
Important: If you opt out of the from using an e-textbook or an e-textbook with Courseware, you will be responsible for purchasing the necessary access and materials required to complete the coursework. Opting out of an e-textbook with Courseware means you opt out of access to both the reading material and the adjoined assignments offered in the e-textbook platform. Please see the section above for a description of e-textbooks and a description of e-textbooks with Courseware. If you have opted out, Courseware access can be purchased directly from the publisher (such as Pearson or McGraw-Hill).

How do you get the bookshelf to auto-update when you enroll in another class to reflect the new books? My old textbook is on my "bookshelf" but my new class does not show.
Hello Christina,
Your textbook for your new course will show up after your course has become active. Students can go into an upcoming course 10 days before the start date, so this is about when your new textbook should show up. Hope this helps!

Hello Dena,
Losing access to an e-textbook could happen for a few different reasons. There could be an issue with the book’s website, BlueQuill, or your account. My first suggestion is to clear your cache and cookies in your browser, then reopen your book through BlueQuill. If this does not work, make sure you are still registered for the course, your book license isn’t expired, and if that all looks good then you can submit a ticket with our help desk (helpdesk@franklin.edu).
Thank you
