Grading With Rubrics Overview
Some assignments in BlueQuill are designed to be graded using a built-in rubric. The rubric offers options to score assignment criteria as a range or static score, as well as offer students feedback for each criterion.
Identifying Rubric Assignments
When there is a rubric in an assignment, you will see this icon on the right-hand side of the screen:
You can also tell if an assignment has a rubric inside the GradeGrid when you see this icon inside a GradeGrid cell:
Viewing Rubrics
To view a rubric inside an assignment, click on the rubric icon on the right-hand side of the screen. This will slide the rubric into view. To slide it back out of view, click the 'X' on the top right of the rubric.
Accessing A Specific Student's Rubric
There are two ways to open a rubric for a specific student for an assignment. The first way is by opening The Hub within an assignment and the second option is through the GradeGrid.
From inside the assignment:
From within the assignment, you can open both the hub and the rubric (in either order) in order to view the rubric for a specific student. You can also just click on the score icon for the student you want to grade:
From the GradeGrid:
Clicking on the rubric icon inside the GradeGrid will open the assignment, rubric, and the student from the cell that was selected.
Entering Rubric Scores and Feedback
The rubric allows you to enter scores for each criterion as either a range or a static number.
It's also important to note that when you are working with rubrics, all scores and feedback are automatically saved, but they are not published to students until you manually publish all grades.
Score (range):
When the score is designed into the rubric as a range, you will need to type in a number where it says Criteria Score. Click in the cell next to the '+' to enter a score.
NOTE: Make sure to pay attention to the allowed range of scores. Sometimes there may be gaps in the score ranges due to a design error or you may be trying to award more/fewer points than allowed.
Notice that the appropriate cell will highlight in blue based on the number that was entered.
Score (static):
When the score is designed to use a static number, you will need to select the cell for the appropriate score.
Notice that the number selected will automatically populate where it says 'Criteria Score' once a cell has been selected.
Criteria Feedback (feedback per row):
You also have the ability to provide feedback per criteria row. Do this by clicking in the box that says "provide criteria feedback".
Grade Comment:
Adding comments works just like any other assignment without a rubric. Simply type your comment to the student in the box labeled 'Leave a comment'.
This will save automatically, but will not publish to the student until you click the publish to student button or publish all grades.
Overall score:
The overall score will automatically update as the rubric is filled in.
Negative Points
A rubric can be designed to deduct points or a percentage of points for the total score. This is often used to deduct points for lateness, however, late policies are now automatically built into rubrics. To learn more about how late policies work, see our article Late Policies in Rubrics.
Negative points work the same as above but will subtract points instead of adding them to the total score. A negative point row will have a red heading and a '-' icon next to the criteria score.
Publishing Grades
You can click the arrow to publish just that grade to the student, or you can click the button on the top of the roster to publish all unpublished grades at once.
You can use the ‘tab’ key on your keyboard to navigate to the comment box, or you can click in the comment box with your mouse. When you leave a comment, it will save automatically. It will also need to be published, like the grade for the student to see it. When you publish a score, or comment, or both at the same time, the color of the score will change and the arrow icon will go away.
The Student Experience
Viewing the rubric before doing the assignment:
To view a rubric inside an assignment, click on the rubric icon on the right-hand side of the screen. This will slide the rubric into view. To slide it back out of view, click the 'X' on the top right of the rubric.
Viewing Rubric Results
After the grade has been published, the student will see the individual scores, feedback per row, and criteria when they open the rubric.
