Submitting Assignments Overview
BlueQuill allows students to easily upload, create, and submit assignments to their instructor right within the assignment page. Students can upload a variety of file types, including ZIP files, or create a typed up document straight from within BlueQuill. BQ Docs is the way all files are stored and shared, which also allows instructors to share documents back to their students. For a short overview of submitting assignments, view the video below:
Uploading and Submitting Assignments
Uploading and submitting assignments in BlueQuill is easy. From your courses' home page, click on any assignment that requires a submission file. You can tell that an assignment requires a submission because the assignment will have an "Add" button within the assignment page.
- From the assignment's page, click on "Add" to open the submission menu:
- Click on "Upload" to open the file selection menu and find your file's location. After choosing your file to upload, you will see the file appear on your assignment page like so:
- Now that you have uploaded your document, it's important to remember to submit your assignment as well. Click on "Submit for Grading" and then "Yes" to finalize your submission.
- By clicking this button, your instructor will then be able to download your assignment.
- Important: If your instructor downloads your submitted assignment, you will not be able to resubmit your submission, so make sure your file is ready to upload.
- Your submission will now show a green checkmark to it if you submitted it on time. If you submitted the assignment late, then the check mark will appear red.
- After submitting files, you can see the blue paper icon with a number next to it, which displays how many files have been uploaded to that assignment. Click this icon to collapse or open the list of files submitted. You should watch this icon to see if your instructor has uploaded any feedback to you.
Creating Assignments in BQ Docs
In addition to uploading files for submission, students can also create BQ Doc documents straight from within BlueQuill. These files can then be saved, edited later, and uploaded as a submission. To do this:
- From the assignment's page, click on "Add" to open the submission menu:
- Click on "Create" to open the file creation menu.
- Enter your submission's title and description. Tags are optional.
- Click "Create Document" to create your file and open up the BQ Docs document editor. You will see a view like this:
- From here, you can type up your assignment and perform many of the standard actions needed when editing a document:
- Important: Make sure you click "Save" to save your changes. This does NOT submit your assignment, however.
- To annotate your document, click on the bookmark icon at the upper left. This allows you to leave comments on your document for further explanation.
- You can adjust the size of the document window by clicking and dragging the three white bars icon up and down. Also, note the Save, Overlay, Minimize and Full-Screen buttons at the top right.
- The Overlay button allows you to mark your document with markers of 16 different colors. Click the Eraser to erase your marks.
- The Note button allows you to add notes over top of your document with a date stamp. You can resize the notes by dragging the triangle in the corner of the note.
- The example below has a pink “marker” square and a green note:
- When you are finished editing your document, click Save at the upper right of the editor. You can click the minimize button to remove the document from your screen.
Editing and Resubmitting Assignments
If you ever need to edit or resubmit an assignment submission, there are buttons dedicated to these actions. When you hover over the document in the list, you will see, from left to right, icons to edit, delete, and share that document like so:
- Click the paper icon to open your document in the BQ Docs editor
- Click the trash can icon to delete the document as an attachment to that assignment
- Once you have deleted an assignment, you can upload another one to submit for grading in its place.
- NOTE: BlueQuill will not allow you to resubmit an assignment if your instructor has already downloaded a previously submitted file. You must ask your instructor to allow re-submissions.
- Click the share icon to share one or more documents before you submit them. When you click the share icon, you will see a list of instructors with whom you can share the document. Select the instructor, and then click SHARE. Now your instructor can view your submission without submitting it to be graded.
I am trying to submit my powerpoint presentation for MKTG 450. International Marketing, but I kepts getting this message "Upload Failed! International Marketing Presentation.pptx" maximum file size. I will need help on this please. Thanks
Hi Daniel, it looks like from the message that the file size is too big. Try compressing it into a zip file and submitting it that way.
I have submitted a document for grading twice in class PF321-H1WW, it seemed to work, but when I went into the lesson later, it seems as if there is nothing there. My class starts on Jan 4, and the assignment is due on Jan 10. Am I too early?
Hi John, when you go back to the assignment, click on the document icon with the blue number. This should expand all the files you have associated with the assignment. Look for a green check mark to validate that the assignment was successfully submitted. I hope this helps.
I had this same problem last night as well. I have tried to submit my assignment and I try to upload it an it freezes and wont continue. today I was able to submit my assignments from last night however now it is doing the same thing and I need to get this one submitted asap.
Misty, I'm sorry to hear that you are having issues with submissions. I sent you an email requesting more details to make sure we can get it resolved.
I received a notification that I received 0 on a paper that I submitted. When I look at the assignment I can see the assignment is pinned--is it possible that I forgot a step and it is just sitting there?
After adding an assignment and having it 'pinned', you need to click the 'submit for grading' button in order for it to be submitted to the instructor.
Paul, is there any log of uploaded but not "submitted" assignments available to the instructor. I've had the same problem as Dara above twice now. Both times were while travelling with spotty internet service. I would like to be able to prove I had uploaded assignments on time, but for some reason they did not show "submitted".
@Andrew The instructor can only view files that have been submitted for grading.
I am trying to submit a paper to my professor I emailed her the assignment me because the submission says that the upload has been locked by the professor. she said i should still be able to submit but i cant. i need to submit for the grade. what can i do?
I submitted two written assignments (uploaded to the required Dropbox) and received email receipts for the submissions on Saturday night. Monday, I learned that I had received a grade of zero for both assignments because the instructor only received a blank page for one and a black page for the other. I reported this to the Helpdesk and was advised that my ticket would be created and processed. My instructor asked me to resubmit them. I cannot resubmit the assignment through the Dropbox (it's been locked) and the instructor believes he doesn't have access to lock or unlock the Dropbox. Are there instructions available that I can pass along?
Yes Dayna, here is a link to that article https://bluequill.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/225255447-Tool-Lock
If a student updates a file and then re-submits a paper (having marked the first paper as "submit for grading"), is there a way for the student to go back and remove or update the status of the original submission?
Jane, if a student re-submits the same file (with the same file name) after it's been updated, they will have the option to either "replace existing" file or "change name and upload". Replace will overwrite the previous file whereas changing the name will submit it as a second file. The student cannot delete or remove a file after it has been submitted.
However, once the faculty member views or downloads the submission, the assignment becomes "locked". The faculty member can unlock the assignment per student in the hub when that assignment and student are selected.
